Textural, oversized, and endlessly wearable — The Vertical Stripes Sweater is a study in understated elegance. Worked bottom up in a classic (k4, p4) rib, the vertical lines create a beautifully structured fabric that elongates and flatters. Sleeves are picked up around the armhole and worked in the round, and a neat neckband finishes the neck opening — meaning almost no seaming or finishing required.
Designed by Petite Knit, this is a rewarding intermediate knit that rewards patience at the blocking stage — the rib will bloom and relax into its full, gorgeous shape once washed and blocked.

A Note on Blocking
Because this sweater is worked in rib, it will appear quite narrow on the needles. Blocking is essential to achieve the correct measurements. Steam or wet block the finished sweater, stretching it to the measurements listed below, and allow it to dry flat. The sweater will retain its shape beautifully once blocked. Always make a swatch and block it before casting on.
Needles
- 4 mm [US6] and 4.5 mm [US7] circular needles — 40 cm and 80 or 100 cm (16 and 32 or 40 inches)
- 4 mm [US6] double pointed needles (or Magic Loop)
Gauge
19 sts × 26 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 inches) in (k4, p4) rib, after wash and blocking
