The Sophie Hood is a beautifully simple, modern hooded scarf worked in one piece from tip to tip. It is knitted flat, back and forth in garter stitch, with elegant built-in i-cord edges that give a polished finish without extra fuss.

The hood itself is shaped with increases and decreases, then neatly sewn together at the back of the neck using mattress stitch. The result is a timeless, cosy accessory that sits comfortably around the neck and shoulders β€” perfect for cooler weather and effortless layering.

This is a satisfying, rhythmic knit that suits confident beginners and experienced knitters alike.

Yarn Information (metre-based, substitution friendly)

The Sophie Hood is designed for a soft DK to light worsted weight yarn, knitted with one strand.

This cna be quite flexible however as you can knit it up with a thicker weigt as long as you focus on the WIDTH of the hood over the length of the piece.Β

The fabric should be:

  • Soft and flexible (not crisp or stiff)

  • Light but warm

  • Suitable for garter stitch (drape matters here)

  • Ideally wool, alpaca, cashmere, or wool blends

Yarn Requirements (by size)

Based directly on the original PetiteKnit yarn specifications, the total yarn required is approximately:

  • Size S: 450–500 metres

  • Size M: 600–650 metres

  • Size L: 750–800 metres

These metre ranges allow for variation in fibre density and yarn structure while staying safely within pattern requirements.

What to look for when substituting yarn

Choose a yarn that sits roughly within:

  • 100–150 m per 50 g, or

  • 200–300 m per 100 g

Always check:

  • Gauge (17 sts per 10 cm in garter stitch)

  • Finished fabric feel (garter stitch highlights drape and softness)
