The Friday Sweater – Junior is a timeless, cosy jumper worked from the top down in a beautiful broken rib stitch. It features classic raglan shaping, a folded rib neckline, and ribbed cuffs and hem for a comfortable, wearable finish.

Broken rib has a lovely texture and stretch, making this a forgiving and practical sweater for children. The pattern includes detailed sizing and clear instructions, and is ideal for confident beginners through to experienced knitters.

Because broken rib grows with washing and wear, the pattern strongly recommends knitting and washing a swatch before measuring gauge.


Sizing

Ages: 1–2 (2–3) 3–4 (4–5) 5–6 (6–7) 7–8 (8–9) 9–10 (10–12) 12–14 years

The sweater is designed with approximately 10–13 cm of positive ease, giving it a relaxed, comfortable fit that works well for layering.


Yarn Type & Weight (Generic Guidance)

This pattern is designed for a light DK / fingering-to-light-DK yarn knitted on 3 mm needles.

Recommended yarn characteristics:

  • Weight: Light DK / heavy 4-ply

  • Fibre: Wool or wool-blend (smooth yarns work best to show the rib texture)

  • Meterage guide: approx. 230–250 metres per 50 g

Smooth, elastic yarns give the best stitch definition and help the ribbing hold its shape.

Real-world tip (this matters):
Most knitters will want to allow an extra 25–50 g ball, especially for older sizes or if adjusting sleeve length.


Needles & Gauge

  • Gauge: 28 sts × 44 rows = 10 × 10 cm in broken rib after washing

  • Needles:

    • 3 mm circular needles (40 & 60 cm)

    • 2.5 mm circular needles (for ribbing)

    • DPNs or Magic Loop for sleeves
