The Frankie Sweater Baby is a cosy, practical little jumper designed specifically for babies and toddlers. It’s worked from the top down, allowing you to adjust the length of the body and sleeves as you go — perfect for growing humans.

The construction is simple and clever, making this a really satisfying knit without being overwhelming. The fit is comfortable and roomy, ideal for layering over onesies and dresses, and it’s designed to be easy to get on and off wriggly babies.

This is a brilliant everyday sweater: warm, wearable, and endlessly gift-able.

Fit & Style

  • Classic baby sweater shape

  • Comfortable, practical fit with positive ease

  • Easy to layer

  • Designed for movement and everyday wear

Yarn Type (generic guidance)

This pattern is designed for a DK / light worsted (8-ply) yarn.

Best suited yarn characteristics:

  • DK / 8-ply weight

  • Soft, non-scratchy fibres (baby-safe)

  • Wool, wool blends, merino, alpaca blends or cotton/wool blends

  • Smooth yarns work best for stitch definition

Typical yarn specs to look for:

  • ~200–225 metres per 100 g

  • Knits nicely on 3.5–4 mm needles

  • Not bulky, not fluffy — soft and stable

Avoid chunky, 10-ply or novelty yarns — they’ll be too heavy and distort the fit.

Approximate Yarn Requirements

(Always round up if you’re between sizes — babies spill things)

Size Approx. metres Approx. weight

3–6 months ~250–300 m ~125–150 g

If knitting stripes or colourwork, recommend adding one extra ball for safety.
