The Novice Slipover is a classic, simple sleeveless vest worked from the top down in smooth stockinette stitch. You begin with the back yoke, then pick up stitches along the cast-on edge to work each shoulder. Once the front and back yokes are joined, the body is worked seamlessly in the round.

At the end, you’ll add tidy ribbed edges around the neck and armholes for a clean finish. It’s a very beginner-friendly project β€” gentle shaping, straightforward stitches, and a satisfying, wearable result.

Yarn Type Needed

You have two main yarn types you can use for this slipover:

Option A β€” Light worsted / Aran wool (single strand)

Creates a warm, structured vest with crisp stitch definition.

Option B β€” DK/8-ply wool held together with laceweight mohair

Gives a softer, slightly fluffy finish with lovely drape.

Look for yarns that comfortably achieve:
17 sts Γ— 25 rows = 10 cm on 5 mm needles, after washing and blocking.
