The Friday Slipover is one of those pieces that becomes an instant favourite β€” simple, wearable, and surprisingly fun to knit. It’s worked top-down in a beautifully textured broken rib, starting with the back yoke, then moving through the shoulders, the front yoke, and finally the body. Clean ribbing frames the neckline and armholes for a polished finish.

Because broken rib relaxes after washing and wearing, this is definitely a β€œblock your swatch” project. Pre-wash gauge sits around 24–25 sts per 10 cm, but will settle to the required 22 sts over 10 cm once your fabric blooms.

And yes β€” this design is absolutely perfect for scrap yarn. If you love a stripe moment or want to blend leftover yarns into something beautiful, this slipover is a brilliant canvas. Work subtle tonal shifts by changing just your halo strand, or go bold by swapping both fibres. It's a fantastic way to use what you already have while still ending up with a beautifully finished piece.

Yarn Type Needed for the Friday Slipover

This pattern is designed for a soft 4-ply / fingering yarn held together with a laceweight mohair, creating a light but warm fabric with lovely drape and texture.

To match gauge and behave like the original:

  • Choose a fingering / 4-ply yarn

  • Hold it with a laceweight mohair or mohair-style yarn

You can knit it in solid colours or lean into the full scrap-yarn vibe β€” this pattern handles stripes, colour-melting, and creative combinations beautifully.

If you need help pairing yarns or planning colours, just send us a message β€” or pop into The Wool Shop in Rangiora and we’ll happily help you plan your palette.
