The Dagmar Sweater Man is a beautifully structured, textured knit — one of those satisfying top-down jumpers that feels as good to make as it does to wear. It begins with the back yoke, worked flat so you can shape those shoulders cleanly. From there, stitches are picked up to create each shoulder, then joined for the front before the whole piece comes together in the round.

The sleeves are worked top-down (always a bonus for length tweaks), and the neckline is finished with a tidy rib that gives the sweater a classic, grounded look.

This design uses a bold, rhythmic texture pattern, so take a moment to knit and block a swatch — texture can change more than plain stockinette, and hitting the right gauge will make all the difference to fit, shoulder width, and drape.

Yarn Type Needed

To get the structure and stitch definition this textured pattern needs, choose a 10-ply / worsted weight wool that meets gauge.

You’re looking for:

  • A classic 10-ply / worsted

  • Wool or wool-blend with enough body to show texture clearly

  • Gauge: 18 sts × 24 rows = 10 cm on 4.5 mm needles (after blocking)

If you'd like help selecting the best yarn for this project, just message us — or pop into The Wool Shop in Rangiora and we’ll walk you through the options.

Approximate Yarn Quantities

You’ll need approximately 900–1300 g of worsted-weight yarn, depending on size:

  • 900 (900) 1000 (1000) 1100 (1100) 1200 (1200) 1300 g
    ≈ 1485 (1485) 1650 (1650) 1815 (1815) 1980 (1980) 2145 m
(assuming 165 m per 100 g — we’ll help you adjust if your chosen yarn differs)

Needles

  • 4.5 mm circulars: 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 cm

  • 3.5 mm circulars: 40 / 80 / 100 cm

  • 3 mm circulars: 40 cm

  • DPNs in 3.5 mm (or use Magic Loop)

Difficulty

★★★★★ — an advanced but thoroughly rewarding knit.
