Bring a little balletcore to your everyday wardrobe with these slouchy leg warmers from Purl Foundry. Wear them for post-workout warmth or as a cosy finishing touch to your outfit, with tailored ribbing and your choice of a plain or cabled finish.
Worked from the bottom up in 4ply / fingering-weight yarn, the design includes a tapered top edge and five sizes to help you find your preferred fit.
Yarn and fit
Choose a 100% wool or wool-blend 4ply / fingering-weight yarn for structure and warmth. If machine washing is likely, choose a suitable superwash yarn and follow its care instructions.
Plain leg warmers
Allow 0–6cm / 0–2.25 inches of positive ease: the finished circumference is larger than your calf circumference, depending on your preferred fit.

Cabled leg warmers
Choose from 3cm / 1.25 inches of negative ease to 3cm / 1.25 inches of positive ease, according to your fit preference. Negative ease means the finished circumference is smaller than your calf circumference; positive ease means it is larger. The cabled fabric appears bulkier than the plain version, so the recommended ease differs while the finished circumferences remain the same.

For either version, you can reduce yarn usage by shortening the leg warmers and allowing less fabric to gather at the ankle.
Needles and notions
- 2.5mm / US 1.5 and 3mm / US 2.5 circular needles with a 40cm / 16-inch cord.
- The designer used magic loop for the top ribbing. A shorter cord or double-pointed needles are alternative options; shorter cords can restrict movement.
- Cable needle for the cabled version.
- Scissors.
- One stitch marker.
- Yarn needle.
