A lovely layering piece for your handmade wardrobe, the Ivy Cape pairs simple stockinette stitch with thoughtfully shaped shoulders and neckline. Slip it over your favourite outfit when you want an extra layer without the full length of a jacket.
The Ivy Cape is worked seamlessly from the top down. Shoulder increases are worked first, followed by a section with increases down along the yoke. Short rows shape the neckline.
Yarn
10 ply yarn. Choose your yarn to achieve the stated gauge.
Sizes & measurements
Small (medium) large. Measurements below are given in this order.
- Shoulder width: approximately 40 (42.5) 46 cm [15¾ (16¾) 18 inches].
- Cape circumference: approximately 143 (156) 170 cm [56¼ (61½) 67 inches].
- Length: 50 (55) 60 cm [19¾ (21¾) 23½ inches], measured at the centre back.
The length can be adjusted to suit your preference. The recommended finish is at the bend of your elbow.
Gauge
16 stitches × 24 rows = 10 × 10 cm [4 × 4 inches] in stockinette stitch on 5 mm [US8] needles.
Needles
5 mm [US8] circular needles in lengths of 40, 60 and 80 and/or 100 cm [16, 24 and 32 and/or 40 inches].
Techniques used
Stockinette stitch, shoulder and yoke increases, and short-row neckline shaping, with seamless top-down construction.
