Visit The Wool Shop in Rangiora: A New Zealand Yarn Shop Worth the Trip

One of the loveliest things we hear from people who visit us is, “We’re so glad we came.”

The Wool Shop has been in the same spot on High Street in Rangiora for more than 40 years. We’re an independent yarn shop in North Canterbury, around 30 minutes north of Christchurch, and our physical shop is every bit as important to us as our online one.

From the street, you might think we’re quite a small shop. Then you walk through the door and discover just how much yarn we have managed to tuck inside.

There is a lot to look at, plenty to touch, and normally quite a few things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them.

If you’re visiting Christchurch, travelling through Canterbury or planning a New Zealand trip with a few yarn shops marked on your map, we’d love you to include us. Rangiora makes a lovely wee outing from Christchurch, and we think we’re well worth the trip.

Looking for a yarn shop near Christchurch?

You’ll find us at 123 High Street, Rangiora.

We’re two shops down from the corner of High Street and Victoria Street, where Coffee Culture is. Look out for The Wool Shop sign and you’ll know you’re in the right place.

Rangiora is around 30 minutes north of Christchurch. You can plan a special trip to see us or include us as a little diversion while you’re travelling through North Canterbury.

Some people stay for hours, which we completely understand. There are plenty of cafés nearby, so you can browse, go away for coffee or lunch, and come back once you’ve had time to think.

Come in and take your time

You’re very welcome to browse without being ready to buy.

You can touch the yarn, feel the samples, sit down with the pattern folders, take photographs and think about things. If today is simply a looking day, that is absolutely fine with us.

We know yarn shops can sometimes feel a little overwhelming, especially when you’re new, don’t know all the right words yet, or have a pattern full of information that currently means very little to you.

You don’t need to have everything worked out before you come in. Ask us where something is, tell us what you’re hoping to make, or let us know that you would simply like to wander.

We will never pressure you to make a decision before you’re ready. We want visiting us to be the lovely part of your day.

What you’ll find when you walk inside

Our displays move around as the seasons change and new yarn arrives, but the main areas of the shop tend to stay fairly consistent.

Here’s a loose tour so you know what to expect when you walk through the door.

Chunky yarn, double knit and cotton

On your right as you enter is our chunky section. This is where you’ll find yarns from 12 ply upwards.

If you’re planning a warm jumper, a blanket or something satisfyingly quick, this is a good place to start.

To the left is what I tend to call double-knit alley. Our double-knit yarns run down both sides for much of the length of the shop, giving you a lot of colours, fibres and price points to compare.

At the front left, you’ll also find our cotton ranges, including 4 ply, 8 ply and 10 ply cotton yarns.

Our crochet corner

The front left of the shop is also home to our crochet corner.

You’ll find yarns that work beautifully for crochet, along with crochet hooks and books. If you need help working out which yarn will suit your project, please ask.

Sock yarn and acrylic yarn

The till is around the middle of the shop on the right-hand side, with our sock yarns opposite it.

This can be a slightly dangerous little area if you enjoy a good speckle, stripe or tiny ball of possibility.

People are also often surprised by the size of our double-knit acrylic range.

Yes, we love wool. We also understand that wool isn’t the right choice for every person, every budget or every project. Many knitters and crocheters genuinely enjoy working with acrylic, and we want them to have good options too.

The baby yarn corner

Walk past the till and just around the corner on your right, and you’ll find our baby yarn section.

This includes yarns from 2 ply to 4 ply, along with the occasional baby double knit. It’s a lovely place to browse if there is a new baby on the way or you’re looking for something soft, washable and gentle.

Patterns, needles and useful little things

At the back of the shop, you’ll find our pattern folders.

These are arranged into baby, children’s, women’s and men’s patterns, along with accessories and homewares. You can sit at the table and take your time looking through them.

Once you find a pattern you love, take it from the folder and bring it to the counter. We just ask that you put the folders back when you’re finished so the next person can find them too.

The folders are only part of our pattern range. You’ll also spot patterns displayed throughout the shop, including PetiteKnit patterns and designs from independent designers. Have a good look as you wander so you don’t miss them.

The back of the shop is also where you’ll find our ChiaoGoo and Addi needle ranges, along with buttons, sewing threads and other useful tools.

If you know the needle size you need but aren’t sure about the length or type, ask us. That is a very normal yarn-shop question.

Please touch the samples

You’ll see knitted and crocheted samples throughout the shop. They hang on the walls, sit in displays and are tucked amongst the yarn.

The samples aren’t for sale. They are there to help you see what a yarn can become.

You are very welcome to touch them. Feel the fabric, look at the stitches and ask questions.

Each sample has a label showing the pattern and yarn used, so you can use it as a starting point for your own project. Sometimes holding the finished piece tells you far more than looking at a ball on a shelf ever could.

What our team can help you with

Our team is small but mighty. We all knit to some degree, several of us knit a lot, and some of us crochet too.

We also use the yarns we stock.

We know how many of them behave on the needles, what they feel like once they have been washed, how they wear and which sorts of projects they suit. If we find a yarn consistently doesn’t meet the grade for us, we don’t keep stocking it.

That practical knowledge is a big part of what you get when you visit.

We can help with:

• Finding the right section of the shop or pattern range
• Working out whether we stock a pattern you have seen
• Yarn substitutions when the original yarn isn’t available or doesn’t suit your budget
• Checking the yarn weight and metreage your pattern requires
• Calculating quantities for the size you want to make
• Talking through how a pattern is constructed
• Comparing fibres and explaining how they may wash, wear and change over time

If you have found a pattern online, bring the pattern or a clear photograph showing its name and designer.

We don’t usually choose a pattern from scratch for you, but if we can see what it is, we can quickly tell you whether we stock it and help you find yarn that may work.

It also helps if you know the yarn weight the pattern uses. If you don’t, that’s okay. Show us what you have and we can help you find it.

You’re welcome to tell us your budget too. That gives us something useful to work with and helps us show you options that genuinely fit.

The best time to come in for knitting help

If you need more involved knitting help, the quietest time is usually between 9 and 10 am, Monday to Thursday.

Saturdays can be very busy, and our small team may not be able to stop for a longer troubleshooting session then.

If you’re making a special trip for help, call or email first. We can let you know when someone is most likely to have time to sit with your question.

Looking for New Zealand yarn?

If you’re visiting New Zealand, or travelling from another part of the country, you may be looking for yarn that feels connected to where you have been.

At the front of the shop, you’ll find a beautiful selection of New Zealand-designed and locally connected yarns, including yarn made in or closely tied to Canterbury.

Some are wonderfully local. Others travel outside the region for part of their processing before coming back.

We can tell you the stories we know, help you find our New Zealand merino and possum yarns, and point you towards designs from New Zealand knitwear designers too.

Whether you want enough yarn for a full garment or one special skein to remember your trip by, ask us to show you the New Zealand options. We’re very happy to explain what makes each one different and what it might become.

A quick note about the yarn on display

We fit an extraordinary amount into our shop, but not every ball we own is out on the shelves.

There is more yarn in our stockroom. If you can only see a few balls of a particular colour, please ask before assuming that’s all we have.

Our yarn range and stock levels are shown on our website, which makes it a useful place to look before you travel. If you need a garment quantity, have a particular colour in mind or notice that something is running low, give us a call or send us an email.

We can check what is here, talk to you about what may be coming, and sometimes arrange to have an order ready for your visit.

You can also order online for collection and then have a proper browse when you arrive.

If we don’t have quite enough yarn on the day, we may be able to order the remainder or courier it to you later. We’ve had visitors choose yarn while they are on holiday, then collect it when they pass through again.

There is often a way to make it work.

You’re welcome to take photographs

Please feel free to take photographs of yarn, labels and colour numbers while you’re in the shop.

It is surprisingly difficult to remember which yarn you loved once you’re back at your accommodation, staring at the website and thinking, “Now, what was it I was looking at?”

A quick photograph makes it much easier to find the yarn online or ask us about it later.

Parking and travelling from Christchurch

There is often parking directly outside the shop, including accessible parking.

You’ll also find parking behind the shops and in the surrounding streets. Much of the parking has a two-hour limit, and this is sometimes policed. If you’re planning a long visit, keep an eye on the time as you may need to move your car.

You can also catch a bus from Christchurch. This can be an easy option if you don’t have a car or rental car while you’re visiting. Check the current timetable before travelling so you know when you need to wander back to the bus stop.

Accessibility and facilities

The shop has a level entrance and has been arranged to make it easier to move around with a wheelchair, walking frame or pram.

If you need help with the door, reaching something or moving around the shop, please ask. We want you to feel looked after while you’re here.

We don’t have a customer toilet in the shop, but there are cafés with facilities very close by.
