How We Choose the Yarn We Stock (and How to Know It’s Right for You)

One of the first things people say when they walk into the shop is,
“I can’t believe the range of yarn you have.”

And I understand why.

A lot of yarn stores sit in one lane. They focus on a couple of favourite brands. Or they stay firmly at the high end. Or they keep everything budget friendly.

When we took on the shop, we made a very deliberate decision not to do that.

We wanted to stock yarn for every stage of knitter.

We Stock Across the Whole Spectrum

When we choose yarn, we are always thinking about balance.

In most weights and categories, you’ll find:

  • Something affordable

  • Something mid-range

  • Something premium

That matters, because not every project needs the same level of investment.

Sometimes you are knitting something practical and hard wearing.
Sometimes you are making a special sweater you want to wear for years.
Sometimes you are trying something new and you don’t want to spend a fortune while you figure it out.

The yarn needs to match the purpose.

We Curate Carefully, We Don’t Just Stock Everything

We do not bring in full ranges blindly.

We look at:

  • Fibre content

  • Colour range

  • Price point

  • Durability

  • Wearability

  • How it fits with what we already have

Sometimes we stock a full colour range.
Sometimes we select only the shades we know our customers will actually knit with.

We pay attention to what you are choosing. We watch what sells. We quietly remove lower sellers and bring in yarns that better suit what you are making.

Right now we are seeing rich browns and burgundies come through strongly. Soft greens and taupes are still steady. Brighter tones are returning.

The shop will look slightly different in a couple of years’ time. That is intentional.

We Think Deeply About Fibre

When we assess a yarn, we are asking practical questions.

Is it pure wool?
Is it blended?
Is it machine washable?
Is it hand wash only?
Is it soft enough for skin?
Is it durable?
Will it hold its shape?

We make sure we have:

  • Pure wool that blooms beautifully

  • Superwash options for busy families

  • Acrylic and wool blends for durability and budget

  • Silk and cashmere blends for softness

  • Cotton and plant fibres for warmer climates

  • Yarns suitable for garments, accessories and homewares

Different fibres behave differently. The range exists so you can match the yarn to the project.

We Look at How You’re Actually Knitting

Patterns change. Trends change. Knitting habits change.

Right now a lot of patterns call for two strands held together.

Many of our customers do not enjoy knitting that way.

So we actively look for single strand yarns that give a similar structure and fabric without needing to double up.

We pay attention to what you ask for in the shop.

If something feels awkward, fiddly, or frustrating, we try to find an alternative that works better in your hands.

We Match Yarn to Patterns, But We Don’t Lock You In

Yes, we consider the patterns we stock.

Yes, we make sure we can support popular designers.

But I am not interested in saying, “Here is the pattern, here is the one yarn you must use.”

I want you to have options.

You might want something softer.
You might want something more durable.
You might need to stay within a budget.
You might care deeply about where the fibre was grown.

The range allows for that flexibility.

We Think About Climate

New Zealand and Australia do not have Scandinavian winters.

We choose yarns that suit our environment.

We stock heavier yarns that work beautifully in Canterbury.
We also stock lighter yarns for North Island and Australian customers.

We are careful not to bring in yarn purely because it is fashionable  (such as Sandnes Garn) overseas if it does not suit how we live here.

Budget, Brand and Feeling Good About What You Buy

We are never going to make you feel bad about buying yarn on a budget.

And we are never going to make you feel bad about treating yourself either.

Sometimes someone wants a cheaper yarn that includes alpaca or silk or cashmere. Sometimes that combination simply cannot exist at a very low price point.

We will be realistic about that.

There are reasons some yarns cost more. Fibre quality. Milling location. Smaller production runs. New Zealand manufacturing. Sometimes brand positioning.

Brand does carry a level of accountability and consistency. So yes, we consider that.

But we are always asking, what will give you the best result for your project?

Sometimes we can find a yarn that performs beautifully without carrying a high-end label. Sometimes the premium yarn truly is worth the price.

You do not need to apologise for what you choose.

Our job is to make sure you understand what you are buying and feel confident about it.

We Support New Zealand Makers

Where possible, we support local first.

North Canterbury.
South Island.
New Zealand.

We actively promote smaller producers. We help them think about pricing. We work with them to make sure they are sustainable as businesses.

We believe New Zealand wool deserves to thrive.

That philosophy shapes what ends up on our shelves.

We Test What We Sell

We knit with as much of the yarn as we can.

Even if it is just a square.

We block it. We see how it behaves. We check how it blooms.

We check whether it splits easily.
We check how it feels once knitted.

Yes, some fibres pill more than others. Merino can pill. Softer yarns can pill. That is part of their nature.

If we love a yarn but it has a drawback, we will tell you.

We want you to enjoy both the process and the finished garment.

So How Do You Know It’s Right for You?

If the range feels big, that is okay.

You do not need to understand every fibre or twist.

We will ask you questions.

What are you making?
What stage are you at?
Do you need machine wash?
Are you working to a budget?
Do you want something very local?
Do you hate scratchy wool?

The reason the range is broad is so that those answers lead somewhere useful.

We are not here to push one brand or one way of knitting.

We are here to help you choose yarn that suits your hands, your climate, your project and your budget.

That is how we choose what we stock.

And that is how you know it is right for you.
